Role Summary:

The Payroll and Benefits Specialist will be responsible for the management and administration of the benefits and payroll programs for the company. He/she is required to communicate with members of the organization on a number of issues, findings and recommendations with respect to these programs.

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Create/delete payroll and benefit profiles for all transitioning salaried employees
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for all salaried employees, as well as commission and bonus payments when applicable
  • Compile payroll data such as garnishments, vacation time, insurance and other deductions
  • Validate and ensure that the accuracy and integrity of the payroll system is maintained
  • Ensure compliance with Federal legislation
  • Analyze and recommend modifications and improvements to the payroll processing system and software in order to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Determine and correct any out of balance conditions
  • Examine automated systems outputs such as registers and standard reports
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of a variety of payroll related documents (e.g. invoices for overpayments, payroll register, stop payments, workers' compensation cheques, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, and providing audit references
  • Research discrepancies of payroll information and/or documentation (e.g. time sheets, leave time, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and adherence to procedures prior to processing
  • Verify a variety of payroll related information (e.g. time sheets, direct deposits, wage attachments, benefits, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate distribution of funds and payroll
  • Maintain a wide variety of payroll information, files and records in written and electronic formats for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance
  • Create salaried employee verification letters
  • Communicate with a variety of internal and external parties (federal agencies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate processing of payroll deductions/garnishments
  • Analyze and recommend modifications of the benefits policies or payroll processes to establish competitive and efficient programs and ensure compliance with legal requirements
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of benefit billings, and payroll related general ledger accounts
  • Support and provide back-up coverage for Driver and Owner Operator payroll processes
  • Ensure the creation and timely distribution of T4s
  • Respond to written and verbal inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or direction
  • Other duties as required

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Canadian Payroll Association Certification (PCP)
  • Minimum of 5 years' working experience in a payroll and benefits role
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems, internal controls, and management
  • Ability to prepare ad hoc reports using Microsoft Excel
  • Proven track record of maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Creative, forward thinker
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Superior telephone manners and strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Motivated individual with proven initiative

Assets: 

  • Working knowledge or experience in a Federally legislated environment
  • Dayforce payroll software experience

Senior Director, OH&S

Role Summary:

This role will provide both strategic direction and tactical delivery of the corporate occupational health and safety program with a primary focus on fleet safety.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and monitor the occupational health and safety policies, procedures and programs based on a full review of health and safety-related needs
  • Lead in the review of facility audits and corrective action plans
  • Audit and report on the road inspection results of fleet drivers and equipment
  • Review, analyze and report on the accident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Conduct regular updates with stakeholders on audit results and trends
  • Ensure the annual safety committee and hazardous occurrences reports are reviewed and actioned on
  • Ensure the successful completion of the annual COR and other audits
  • Participate with regulatory and industry organizations that develop, recommend and enforce regulatory and security requirements, and keep the company informed and compliant on relevant government regulations and industry standards and programs

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a transportation safety role, 5+ in a leadership capacity
  • Strong understanding of accident theory and investigations 
  • Thorough knowledge of the Canadian OH&S regulations and Codes and the Canadian Federal and US Road Transport regulations, including hours of service 
  • Superior communication skills

  • Health, Safety & Environment Certification course
  • Reasonable Suspicion training course
  • Conflict Management training
  • Hours of Service training
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification
  • WHMIS certification
  • First-Aid certification
